20-year-old first baseman James Murrell "Jake" Jones made his major league debut with three late-season appearances for the 1941 White Sox. He began the 1942 season in Chicago but was eventually sent to the Shreveport Sports of the Texas League, then a ChiSox affiliate. He joined the Navy on June 30 of that year and ended up flying Grumman F6F Hellcats in the Pacific. Jake Jones is the only major league ballplayer to ever become a wartime ace - he was credited with seven kills.
