On Saturday, May 15, 1943, down 5-3 to the St. Louis Cardinals going into the top of the ninth at Shibe Park, Phillies' manager Bucky Harris called on 29-year-old rookie righthander Willie Fred "Bill" Webb to relieve starter Charlie Fuchs. Webb allowed one run on one hit - a home run by opposing pitcher Mort Cooper - in what was to be his only big league appearance.
